The cost of gasoline, and (more importantly) diesel has eased from the hurtful highs of the summer. Things are looking up a bit, for sure.
But wait ... is this the dawn before the dark? A false spring before a renewed winter of discontent? One last breath of ease before the world ends in 2012?
Or are we really on the road to a sustainable recovery?
At this stage it's anybody's guess, but I'm not holding my breath. With an election ahead that seems to have no good end no matter which party wins, coupled with the specter of a deadlocked Congress lasting past mid-decade, who can dare to be positive about our future?
Still a little good news is welcome after all the bad that has rained down on 2011's parade. And we don't want to look too closely into the gift-horse's mouth.

Not I.
From what I can tell, everything is on a knife-edge balance with the 1% politi-drones doing eveyrthing they can to keep it there. It's fun to keep crossing over the double-yellow to set up for a corner... until a car comes merrily right into your windscreen. Those whore-hopping bastards have been playing with fire far too long.
Seems like one can grab a handful negative indicators and and fistful of positive pointers.
I pushed all of our sub-$100K 401K into Buffett stocks at the September blow-off. But I'm tempted today to sell it all.
When faced with looking forward positively or negatively, I always opt for a measured, negative neutrality, by which I mean I scare myself (and those around me) shitless with dystopic visions, but inwardly maintain a hope for better days - or at least a stable status quo. Schizophrenic I know, but in tune with the times (?)
Ha! Dystopic visions of negative neutrality! Exactly! A fellow worker who often asks me for advice and interpretation calls me "Dr. Doom" ...
